Toasty Toes on Cold Nights

As the evenings grow colder, we all look for ways to keep our feet warm. Thick socks can do the trick, as can utilitarian slippers. But why do simple utilitarianism when you can do superfantastic and practical at the same time?

Orange Jonquil Goody Goody Slippers Goody Goody makes deliciously whimsical slippers that will toast your toes and light up your eyes at the same time. Made of silks, velvets, and rich brocades trimmed with handmade ribbon flowers or elegant tassels, these slippers are not just your average toe-warmers. They’re works of art you can walk in. And right now, selected styles are on sale, including the exuberant Orange Jonquil style shown here.

The usual price for adult-sized slippers is $43.00, which isn’t at all bad. The sale price, though, is $34.40, which is definitely better. Oh, and don’t forget to check out the childrens’ styles, too! Normally priced at $31.00, selected styles are marked down to just $24.80. Isn’t it worth that to keep your child’s feet warm and spark imagination?

Pass the Portmeirion

When I wake up and see a cloudy, dreary, potentially rainy day outside, there is nothing I long for more than the chance to lay on the sofa with a cup of good tea, a plate piled high with dainty finger foods, and a bit of Jane Austen. And when I imagine this, here is what the cup and plate look like:

Portmeirion Up the Garden Path Teacup and Plate This teacup, saucer, and plate set from Portmeirion is in the Up the Garden Path pattern based on the writings of Laura Stoddard and the illustrations in her books. Delicate shades of pink, ivory, and other soft pastels result in a pattern that’s restful, with an air of the old-fashioned about it.

The set comes beautifully gift boxed, which is nice whether you intend to give it to yourself or to someone else. All pieces are dishwasher and microwave safe, too. For all it looks so delicate, Portmeirion dishes are built to last even in the face of some adversity.

Best of all, right now Amazon has this charming set on sale. The list price for the set of cup, saucer, and dessert plate is $28.75, but right now you can get it for just $20.00.

Why at that price, you can afford to get a set for yourself, and a few to give away.

Oh, and if Jane Austen isn’t your thing, I think it would go admirably with nearly any romantic novel or film.

Baby, It’s Cold Outside

Well, if it isn’t, it soon will be. Even I, intrepid California girl what I am, begin to consider retiring the sandals for a few months about this time of year. And of course when I start thinking about the coming colder weather, I think about the chance to invest in a new coat or seven. As it happens, I spotted one on sale at
Saks Fifth Avenue
icon today that I would love to cuddle up to.

This
DKNY coat
icon is sure to get the right kind of attention between the graceful cut and gorgeous red color. The cozy warmth of wool/cashmere blend will allow you to stay out all night, too. There’s even a bit of stretch for ease of movement.
Of course a good deal on it can help warm the heart. Originally priced at $495.00, Saks has marked it down to a mere $297.00! A high-quality wool designer coat at that price? Ooh, that’s keeping me toasty warm!

Oh, and don’t forget: if you spend a minimum of $200.00 (coat, I’m looking at you!) and enter the code SAKSFS at checkout, you get free shipping.

Yes, I’m definitely feeling warmer now.

Handy and Superfantastic

With the weather turning colder, hands are bound to start feeling left out in the cold…unless, of course, you buy them pretty glovesicon to keep them warm and toasty.

These elegant two button leather gloves by Portolano are just the thing to bring both warmth and style to your fingers when they can’t go bare this winter. Not only are they cut beautifully, they also come in your choice of six fashion colors. I’m particularly fond of this teal, but if that’s not your thing, well, they come in red, and old rose pink, and teak brown…and more.

Oh, and if you’re worried about warmth, don’t be. They’re lined in cashmere.

Normally, you’d expect to pay several pretty pennies to get such decadent gloves. The good news is that I found them at Smart Bargains. That means you’ll save big. The retail price of these gorgeous gloves is $100.00, but today at Smart Bargains they’re just $39.99!

Even better, there’s a four button version on sale for precisely the same price.

I get warm inside just thinking about them.

The Daily Grind, Only Better

If you love coffee, then you know one of the most important keys to a good cup of java is freshly ground beans. Nothing else gives quite the same aroma or flavor. I learned this at my mother’s knee many years before I learned to lean on the hallowed bean each and every morning.

As a child I would stare, wide-eyed, as she started her industrial strength coffee grinder in order to get one precious cup of life-giving caffeine. One large, precious cup.

And so it was that I found this KitchenAid Pro Line coffee grinder at Cooking.com and was overcome with a sense of rightness and nostalgia:

KitchenAid 7-oz. Pro Line Burr Coffee Grinder, Nickel Pearl Oh, it’s not the same, of course. Instead of one setting to grind your beans, this one has fifteen settings so that you can find the precise one that pleases both your taste buds and your chosen coffee making process. Whether you’re looking for espresso fine or French press coarse, you can adjust the setting to fit your needs. And since it runs at an enegry-thrifty 450 RPMs, there’s minimal heating of the beans as they grind, and less noise than most professional grade grinders.

Best of all, it’s on a heck of a sale right now. The suggested retail price on this baby is $299.99. Cooking.com usually carries it for $199.99, which is a fabulous deal. Right now, though, during their pre-holiday sale, you can get this incredible coffee grinder for a mere $169.99! That’s $130.00 off the retail price!

If you’re a serious coffee drinker, you cannot afford to pass up this deal. And if someone on your Christmas list (or with an upcoming birthday) loves coffee, now would be a great time to get them the perfect gift.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to find some space on my counter for a new grinder.

I Bamboo. Do You Bamboo, Too?

It’s always good to have a few vases around the house. Filled with flowers, they’re a classic addition to any decor. Filled with less expected items like feathers, sticks, dried grasses, or pinwheeels they can lend a touch of opulence or humor to any room. Some even look great just sitting empty on a coffee table or other empty surface.

Of course, to do that a vase has to be a little special.

Bamboo Vase Collection These Bamboo-look vases should do the trick with style to spare. Each 16″ x 5″ x 5″ vase comes with a clear glass insert and is decorated with a hand painted design at the bottom. Choose from Electricity, Forest, or Modern Copper pattern to go with your home, or give in to temptation and get all three. After all, they’re on a terrific sale at Wrapables.com!

Originally priced at $65.95, they’ve been marked down to just $49.99 each. Oh, and if you’re a member of Wrapables’ Rewardables program, each is worth 100 points.

Spade Work

Sometimes you just need to have something because it feels fun. I’m betting I’m not the only one thinking that this adorable woven PVC satchel caseicon with leather handle by Kate Spade is a whole lot of fun.

With its retro look and cheerful white and coral color scheme, it’s sure to bring a smile to lots of faces…including yours. The 14k gold hardware shines prettily, and the lining is seersucker. There’s even a zippered interior pocket for convenience.

Of course, it’s easier to smile when you have a good secret. My favorite sort to have is knowing that I spent a lot less on something superfantastic than other people think I did. The retail price on this purse is $375.00, but if you go to Nordstrom right now, you can get it for just $224.90. That’s 40% off, which is a great secret to have.

Brace(let) Yourself

If you’ve been watching this space for any length of time, you know I have a bit of a thing for dramatic cuff bracelets. Well, I found another one that I can’t wait to share with all of you.

Hammered Silver and Labradorite Cuff Hmmered sterling silver, silver chains, and a gorgeously faceted labradorite cabochon add up to an elegant, yet offbeat piece of jewelry sure to get a lot of attention. It will look great with jeans, or with just the right little black dress, too.

And did I mention the price? Coldwater Creek used to sell this beauty for $175.00. Right now, though, they’ve got it on sale for just $121.99!

Oh, and if you’re looking for a place to spend that other $53.01, you might head over to the big sale CC is having on women’s shirts, too. Just a thought. After all, they’re up to 70% off.

Pull Out a Plum

If there’s one thing I love, it’s a weekend trip. It’s fun to just drop everything and whisk off for a couple days for a quick change of scenery. Of course, it’s no fun if you don’t have a fabulous little bag that holds just enough gear for two or three days. After all, you don’t want to lug around something huge and bulky to hold a couple spare smalls, a skimpy nightie, a shirt or two, seventeen books, and five pairs of shoes.

What? That isn’t what you’d carry? To each their own, I say. All the same, what you want is something roomy enough to carry necessities but small enough that it isn’t a hassle to carry around. Well I found the solution at Bluefly.

Tufi Duek black leather 'Ana' large weekend tote
This delicious confection of plum leather and coffee suede looks good enough to eat, but is really a superfantastic way to get your basics from point A to point B. At 20″w x 13″h x 7″d, it’s the perfect thing to handle your needs without getting in your way. The 17″ drop handle is short enough to carry in your hand, but long enough to sling casually over a shoulder, if you prefer. The twill nylon lining includes one zippered and two patch pockets! Now that’s convenience. The metal feet will protect the leather bottom for years of wear.

Oh, and since it just mere three pounds, it won’t weigh you down, either.

Yes, I’d say this is pretty much the perfect weekend bag. Even the price is good, if you act now.

The suggested retail price is $635.00, which isn’t all that bad for something this handsome, this practical, and this sturdy. But I don’t like suggested prices. I like discounts. The good news is that Bluefly carries this bag. Normally, they carry it for $381.00, but they’ve just slashed the price again to a mere $342.99! That’s 46% off the original price, and that’s what I call a plum of a deal.

Flatware That’s Anything But Flat

So, you’ve got the table, the chairs, the plates, and the food simmering in take out containers…but what are you going to use to convey the food to your mouth?

Okay, most of us aren’t really so lost that we never bothered to get any flatware at all. Still, what one has may not be precisely what one would like to have in that regard. If that’s your case, allow me to direct you to Smart Bargains and this handsome 18/10 stainless steel flatware by Tracy Porter:

<>Tracy Porter Evelyn Place Setting The detail of the Evelyn pattern is exceptional, and yet the shape of the handle guarantees a comfortable grip. It would coordinate with many different looks seamlessly, too. Each set includes: 1 dinner fork, 1 salad fork, 1 knife, 1 tablespoon, and 1 teaspoon.

Best of all, it’s on sale at 42% off! It’s usually $69.99 a place setting, but right now Smart Bargains has this fabulous pattern for just $39.99 a setting! Whether you’re looking for one place setting to fill out the set you already have, a new pattern to add to your mix-and-match collection, wanting to upgrade to a new look for the entire table, this pattern would be a great place to start looking.
