Friday Finds Under Fifty: The On the Move Edition

Sometimes you just have to get away from it all. When that moment arrives, you’ll want to have everything you need right to hand. After all, part of living the life superfantastic is being prepared for things no Boy Scout ever had to face.

For instance, that pesky question of how to store your delicates en route. I don’t recall my father and brothers discussing that matter when preparing to go to Scout camp back in the day. Tent stakes, yes. Silky undies…not so much.

Luckily enough, we have other resources than the Boy Scout manual to draw on for our needs. We have places like Wrapables.com.

MaggiB Lingerie Trio See, they have this practical and attractive set by MaggiB for handling your undies and for pampering yourself en route. The set includes: an 11″ x 13″ pouch for your lingerie, and a second pouch containing a pair of slippers (for shoe sizes up to 8.5), and an eyeshades, all in a matching satin brocade in your choice of black (shown) or mint. Just slip one pouch into your luggage and the other into your carry on, and go, all for just $16.99 (regular price $34.95).

Pull Out a Plum

If there’s one thing I love, it’s a weekend trip. It’s fun to just drop everything and whisk off for a couple days for a quick change of scenery. Of course, it’s no fun if you don’t have a fabulous little bag that holds just enough gear for two or three days. After all, you don’t want to lug around something huge and bulky to hold a couple spare smalls, a skimpy nightie, a shirt or two, seventeen books, and five pairs of shoes.

What? That isn’t what you’d carry? To each their own, I say. All the same, what you want is something roomy enough to carry necessities but small enough that it isn’t a hassle to carry around. Well I found the solution at Bluefly.

Tufi Duek black leather 'Ana' large weekend tote
This delicious confection of plum leather and coffee suede looks good enough to eat, but is really a superfantastic way to get your basics from point A to point B. At 20″w x 13″h x 7″d, it’s the perfect thing to handle your needs without getting in your way. The 17″ drop handle is short enough to carry in your hand, but long enough to sling casually over a shoulder, if you prefer. The twill nylon lining includes one zippered and two patch pockets! Now that’s convenience. The metal feet will protect the leather bottom for years of wear.

Oh, and since it just mere three pounds, it won’t weigh you down, either.

Yes, I’d say this is pretty much the perfect weekend bag. Even the price is good, if you act now.

The suggested retail price is $635.00, which isn’t all that bad for something this handsome, this practical, and this sturdy. But I don’t like suggested prices. I like discounts. The good news is that Bluefly carries this bag. Normally, they carry it for $381.00, but they’ve just slashed the price again to a mere $342.99! That’s 46% off the original price, and that’s what I call a plum of a deal.

Roll Over, Blusher

Just because you’re on the move doesn’t mean you don’t want to look your best. When getting from point A to point B, it’s important to have a way to protect your most precious possessions…or at least your beauty products.

Japonesque Roll Top Tote Well, I found the perfect solution at Nordstrom, and it’s even on sale!

The Roll-Top Tote by Japonesque is a Nordstrom exclusive that will serve your needs beautifully. On the outside, it’s a demure little black soft-sided bag measuring 9 1/2″w x 8″h x 6 1/2″d with a neat handle and double zippers. Open up the roll top closure, though, and, well, take a look for yourself:

Just In Case

With the price of gas right now, a lot of people are staying home for the summer. That means luggage languishes waiting to be taken home by someone who will love it…and then taken somewhere slightly more interesting.

US Traveller 4-Piece Marino Luggage Set This 4-piece luggage set by US Traveller, for instance, looks ready to go nearly anywhere. What’s more, it’s distinctive enough that it’s unlikely to get confused for someone else’s bags at airport baggage claim! Shown here in chocolate/pink, it also comes in navy/baby blue or spice/orange. It’s made of sturdy 1200 denier polyester with retractable handles and in-line wheels for easy maneouvering in busy terminals.

Comes with a 21″ upright, 26″ upright, 30″ upright, and matching tote to carry on with you. Oh, and a six-year warranty. Not bad.

But best of all, it’s on a great sale at Overstock.com. Originally priced at $599.99, Overstock.com has slashed the price to just $124.99. At that price, you’ll have enough left over to actually get a ticket to ride!

Carry On, My Wayward Daughter

When one is living the superfantastic life, one may find oneself gadding hither, thither and yon for brief visits to interesting places. And when one’s stay is not long, there is no point in taking a great deal of baggage. Besides, we all have heard dread tales of people who boarded the plane only to discover when they reached Boca that their luggage missed the flight.

Either way, we can all use a good carry on bag to hold the bare necessities of a short stay. The best carry on bags are roomy yet compact, well-organized, and unlikely to be mistaken for anyone else’s carry on bag on the plane. After all, I once read the sad tale of a lady who was travelling to appear in one of Andy Warhol’s films. She put her costume of a silver mini-dress, matching go-go boots and silver wig in a simple black carry on bag and boarded her flight, then grabbed her bag (as she thought) when she left, only to discover at the hotel that ‘her’ bag now mysteriously contained a man’s dress shirt, a shaving kit, and boxer shorts of a most conservative style!

This would never have happened had the lady been carrying this elegant yet unmistakable Dr. Zhivago carry on bag from Viva Terra.

Dr. Zhivago Carry On Bag This sturdy yet elegant doctor’s-style bag is covered in recycled vintage wool tweed with a secure brass latch. Two outside pockets conveniently carry your tickets, maps, and other things you may need to reach quickly. Inside, there are another six roomy, zippered pockets to hold your cosmetics, jewelry, etc. as well as a change of clothes. And I guarantee it won’t be mistaken for anyone else’s luggage!

Best of all, this handsome, practical, and eco-friendly bag is also on sale. Originally priced at $289.00, it’s now half off for just $144.00!
