Friday (sort of) Finds (Mostly) Under Fifty: The Get Ready for Next Christmas Edition

It’s a universally acknowledged truth that the day after a major holiday is the best and thriftiest day to start shopping for said holiday. The downside? You have to wait for months before you can pull out your new pretties. The upside? You’ll save a bundle on them, so you won’t wince at memories of the bills when you see them again.

Saks Fifth Ave has some brilliant deals on goodies to deck next year’s hall. Ornaments by designers like Christopher Radko
icon, Kurt Adler Polonaise
icon, Michael Storrings for Landmark Creations
icon, and even Versace
icon are being blown out at prices that will allow you to play Santa for your nearest and dearest. Twistie’s pick? This:

Jay Strongwater Sultana Egg Ornament This is the Sultana Egg ornament by Jay Strongwater. It’s made of mouthblown glass painted with brilliant metallic colors and studded with tiny jewels. Gorgeous. The regular price is $140.00, and I think it’s worth that. Still, I’d rather pay the sale price of just $56.00.

Friday Finds Under Fifty: The Last-Minute Santa Edition

Ho Ho Ho!

So, you’ve got kids on your gift list and nothing to give them? Fret not, for behold, I bring you tidings of great deals which shall appeal to kids both young and old.

There’s a certain time in life when a lot of kids become interested in magic tricks. If there’s a budding David Copperfield in your life (the magician, not the Victorian orphan), then you might want to head over to Smartbargains and take a look at this:

Coin Trick Kit It’s the Melissa and Doug Apprentice Magician coin trick game. Included are instructions and tools needed to master sixteen different coin tricks. It may or may not get the kid cool status in Home Room, but it will definitely build logic and dexterity, in addition to hours of fun.

Best of all, you’ll save big time. The retail price is a cool $50.00, but at Smartbargains it’s just $34.99.

Friday Finds Under Fifty: The Odds ‘n’ Ends Edition

There’s at least one on every gift list. You know the one. It’s the guy who wouldn’t know a wrench from a hacksaw who doesn’t wear a tie and the gal who needs a map to find her kitchen and is allergic to perfumes. These are the people you can’t just give a random gift at the holidays,  because they don’t fit any recognized box. Don’t panic. There are still plenty of superfantastic things you can give them without breaking the bank or leaving them wondering where precisely one returns a crockpot or a set of phillips head screwdrivers.

You can always give them the gift of a great monument without flying them to another country to see it.

Personal Stonehenge Whether you’re buying for someone into alternate spiritual concepts or simply a fan of Spinal Tap, this miniature Stonehenge is sure to please.

Originally priced at $75.00 for a set of three, it’s been reduced at VivaTerra to a thrifty $29.00. At that price, it’s practically a stocking stuffer.

Friday Finds Under Fifty: The Half-Baked Edition

One thing’s for sure: if you bake, the holidays are the best excuse in the world to do it. Of course you need good equipment to make the best cookies, cakes, pies, and breads. Here are a couple of my budget-friendly picks to make your life in the kitchen happier and more successful.

Rachel Ray Cookie Sheets Every year I swear I’m going to get new cookie sheets. I don’t have enough and I don’t have any that are nonstick. This year, I may just go ahead and do it with the deal I found on this Rachael Ray 2-pc. Nonstick Oven Lovin’ Cookie Lovin’ Set at Cooking.com.

You get two 17″ x 11″ nonstick cookie sheets with large and bright orange silicone handles for  easy handling. They’re dishwasher safe and able to withstand heat up to 500f. What’s more, with every purchase, a donation is made to Rachel’s Yum-o charity dedicated to teaching kids and their families about healthy relationships with food, as well as feeding hungry children.

All that and a sale? Sign me up! Because right now at Cooking.com, you can save about a quarter of the price on these great cookie sheets. Regularly priced at  39.95, you can get them right now for just 29.99! Now that’s a great way to feel good about making those holiday treats!

Friday Finds Under Fifty: The Vase the Music Edition

I love vases. Fill them with flowers and you can enjoy the delights of the garden indoors. Sit them empty on your shelves and windowsills, and you can enjoy the artistry of the human hand. Fill them with something unexpected – say, for instance, a cheerful bouquet of pinwheels or a clutch of exotic feathers – and you can amuse anyone who happens to see them.

To get the best out of a vase, though, you need a particularly nice one. The good news is that this needn’t break your bank – not even the piggy one!

Don’t believe me? How about a few examples.

The first one comes from Bellacor. One look at the pretty stripes and charming shape made me want to gaze at it in perpetuity.

Henna Ceramic Vase So very pretty. It stands some 18″ high, so it will look quite impressive on its own. This is a good thing because it’s designed to be used with only dry displays. Remember those feathers I was talking about? This would be a wonderful place for them.

This is also a case of a tremendous bang for your buck. The retail price is a $80.00, which is quite a nice price for something that will look so handsome in your home. But why pay retail when you can get a deal? Bellacor usually carries it for a thrifty $68.00, but right now – if you hurry – you can get it for the basement bargain price of just $28.00!

Friday Finds Under Fifty: The On the Move Edition

Sometimes you just have to get away from it all. When that moment arrives, you’ll want to have everything you need right to hand. After all, part of living the life superfantastic is being prepared for things no Boy Scout ever had to face.

For instance, that pesky question of how to store your delicates en route. I don’t recall my father and brothers discussing that matter when preparing to go to Scout camp back in the day. Tent stakes, yes. Silky undies…not so much.

Luckily enough, we have other resources than the Boy Scout manual to draw on for our needs. We have places like Wrapables.com.

MaggiB Lingerie Trio See, they have this practical and attractive set by MaggiB for handling your undies and for pampering yourself en route. The set includes: an 11″ x 13″ pouch for your lingerie, and a second pouch containing a pair of slippers (for shoe sizes up to 8.5), and an eyeshades, all in a matching satin brocade in your choice of black (shown) or mint. Just slip one pouch into your luggage and the other into your carry on, and go, all for just $16.99 (regular price $34.95).

Friday Finds Under Fifty: The Fruit Fresh Edition

Ah, spring! One of my favorite things about the season is the abundance of delicious, fresh fruit coming into the peak of flavor. Yesterday, I was at my friendly neighborhood grocery store when I was nearly bowled over by the luscious fragrance of ripe strawberries. And they were on sale, too!

In honor of the event, I’m celebrating fruit in today’s column.

One of my all-time favorite fruits has to be apricots. They’re the perfect balance of sweet and tart, and I adore the texture of them as much as the aroma and the flavor. Imagine smelling like apricots and cream.

philosophy apricots & cream shower and shine 3-pc collection You can do just that with this apricots & cream bath set by Philosophy. You’ll get a 24 oz bottle of shampoo, shower gel, and bubble bath, a 24 oz bottle of body lotion, and a 0.5 oz flavored lip shine. Delicious and clean. I like!

I also like the price. The retail value is $67.00. But you’re going to race over to QVC.com to get it. Their regular price is a thrifty $52.50, but right now you can get the superfantastic introductory price of just $48.06. Again, delicious.

Friday Finds Under Fifty: Tote That Bag!

I think we all know by now that one of the must-have accessories for spring is the tote bag. Chances are you already have one or two hiding in your closet gathering dust. Whether you went to a convention or supported PBS, you already have the basic shape. What you may not have is the style required to make a fashion statement.

There are a lot of statement totes out there if you’re willing to spend hundreds of dollars on them, but let’s not kid ourselves. Totes are not staples, they are short-term trends. If you want one, it’s best to find a budget model that merely looks like you spent hundreds on it.

So how should you spend your tote dollars? I have a couple suggestions right here.
