Brighten Your Bed

One quick, easy way to chase away the wintertime blahs and update the look of a bedroom is to change out the bedding. Voila! With a new comforter and a pillow or two, the room looks new and cheerful.

Tommy Hilfiger’s Sanibel Island pattern would be a terrific way to combat winter chill and ennui. The pastel stripes, plaid, and butterfly patterns are enough to make anyone think of spring and smile. What’s more, the pieces are reversible for added versatility. The comforter, for instance, has butterflies on one side and stripes on the other.

The set includesicon: comforter, bedskirt, and two pillow shams (one sham in twin size). The set is made of 100% cotton and is machine washable for easy care, too.

How much would you pay for all that? If you said $279.99, then go buy it somewhere at full price. The rest of you can follow me to Overstock.com and get it for only $129.99, a savings of 54%!

Tweed Meets Beads

A few years ago, a friend of mine told me she’d seen the perfect hat for me. It was a tweed flatcap with beaded flowers and antiqued metallic sequins on it. I tried to keep a straight expression, but couldn’t stop myself making a bit of a face. It just sounded horrible. My brain was breaking.

Luckily for me, said friend bought the hat and gave it to me, anyway. Not only is it the only flatcap that has ever flattered my face, it’s one of my favorite pieces ever. The coloring is subtle and perfect to go with my skin, hair, and eyes. The instant I saw it, I ate my words raw and realized that sometimes descriptions don’t tell you everything.

I tell you this story because I’m about to show you a beaded tweed purse and I want you to keep an open mind when I do it.

Antik Batik Minush Wallet Clutch The Minush Wallet Clutch by Antik Batik may feature that unlikely combination of tweed and beads, but it’s subtle and elegant. Oh, and that strap is removable, in case you’d rather carry it as a clutch. There’s a magnetic closure under the front flap and the lined interior features three patch pockets to keep you organized. Comes in your choice of grey or kaki with brass hardware.

Oh, and did I mention the price? The original bite out of your wallet would have been $268.00, but it’s on sale right now at shopbop.com for just $187.60.

Now that’s a deal my mind would be open to.

Friday Finds Under Fifty: The Black Friday Edition

Ah, Black Friday. The day that shopper and retailer both anticipate and dread in equal measures. The day when the Christmas shopping season officially starts bringing full coffers to businesses and massive congestion to mall parking lots.

The best thing about Black Friday is, of course, all the great deals offered up to the consumer. The worst thing about it is all the crowding, jostling, and general lack of holiday cheer among the throngs of customers who want the deals but hate the lines.

So what does the savvy shopper do? She shops online, of course!

No getting elbowed in the ribs while standing in line, no strange kids running amok, no canned Christmas music unless you want it, no undertrained and overwhelmed holiday hire cashiers to shortchange you or direct you to the opposite area of the store from the item you want…online shopping is the perfect cure for Mall Malaise. And in the interest of making the experience both pleasant and reasonably priced, I’ve gone out and hunted down some superfantastic holiday deals that may inspire you to be the best Secret (or not-so-secret) Santa ever.

Cocoanut Paradise Bath Set The Coconut Paradise Bath and Body set
is the perfect gift for the woman (and we all know her) who needs to slow down and pamper herself once in a while. There’s coconut milk bath gel, moisturizing body lotion, bath salts, an exfoliating pumice stone, and a body puff. All of it comes in an adorably whimsical wire clawfoot bathtub. Even the original price of $39.99 would have made it a find under fifty, but it’s now 38% off at Amazon
for a cool $24.99. At that price, you could get several for those last-minute gifts you didn’t expect to need.

Investment Dressing Without Tears

Even if your budget is limited (and whose isn’t, these days?) it’s a good idea to splurge when you can manage it on a few pieces of really well-made clothes that will last for years. Pick something in a style that may or may not be the height of fashion now, but won’t ever look horribly dated in a color that’s never incorrect, impeccably made of excellent fabric. In fact, what you’re looking for is something along these lines:

Ralph Lauren Cashmere Dress This cashmere dress by Ralph Lauren is just the ticket if you’re looking to do investment dressing. The lines are classic enough to look right for years to come, but the look isn’t boring, either. It comes in a medium heather grey (shown), navy blue, or black. Those are colors that will never look out of place. It’s made of a lovely cashmere jersey, too. Dress it up, dress it down, accessorize it to your heart’s content…this will go from the office to dinner to the theater with ease and still look just right for a weekend in the country.

No, it isn’t cheap in any sense of the word. In fact, the original retail price is $598.00. It’s worth it, too. The good news is that you won’t pay what it’s worth. Instead, you’ll hurry over to Ralph Lauren.com and get it for just $299.00! That’s nearly half off for something you can wear for years and years to come.

And that’s why this investment is worth making, no matter what the stock market is doing.

Straws? No Way! I’m Clutching This.

What’s better than a holiday party? Knowing that you’re walking into that party carrying the best purse thereicon. This beauty by Stuart Weitzman is that purse. Made of silk jacquard, it comes with a removable drop-in strap in case you prefer that over carrying a clutch. Oh, and if you’re not as wild as I am about that gorgeous red, it also comes in classic black.
For all this pretty, you’d usually spend $395.00. Of course, it’s even prettier at 40% off. Do you doubt me? Well, then, let me tell you it’s on sale for just $235.90 at Nordstrom. See? Much better.

Oh! and don’t forget the shoes, also at 40% off.

An Etch Not To Scratch

I admit that most of the time I’m not that wild about etched crystal. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t hate it or think it’s a bad thing. It’s just not usually my style. Every once in a while, though, a piece comes along that really does thrill me. Here’s one now:

The Marly vaseicon by Christofle stands 10″ tall and is almost completely covered in an exhuberant yet tasteful etched design of vines. Displayed on its own or filled with cut flowers, it will look fabulous in any home.

Of course this kind of design and workmanship paired with a name like Christofle is not going to be inexpensive. Even on sale, it still won’t be cheap. It can, however, be a great deal less expensive than the retail price.

That retail price? Oh, a cool $360.00. The sale price at Saks Fifth Avenueicon? $251.90. Cheap? No. All the same, a savings of over $100.00 is still superfantastic. If you happen to have that $250.00 just lying around, you could do a lot worse than spend it on this.

Oh, and don’t forget that on orders of $200.00 or more, you can get free shipping by using the code SAKSFS. That’s not just good, it’s superfantastic!

Great Cookware to the Nines

Regular readers of this space already know what I think of Le Crueset enameled cast iron cookware. It conducts heat perfectly, will go from cooktop to oven with ease, looks great on the table, cleans easily, and provides a great iron-pumping workout when being transported. In addition to all of those great features, it’s also some of the sturdiest cookware on the market.

Of course, there is a downside. That would be the fact that the pricetag puts it into the realm of fantasy for many of us.

That’s why this deal at Chef’s Catalog makes me so happy.

Le Crueset 9-Piece Cookware Set The 9-piece set includes: one 3 1/2 qt Dutch oven and lid, one 1 1/4 qt saucepan and lid, one 9″ skillet, one 6 qt stockpot and lid, and one 1 1/2 qt round casserole and lid. The set comes in your choice of the following colors: cherry (as shown), cobalt, or Caribbean.

If you were paying full price for this set, you’d probably shell out some $625.00. The good news is, you’re not going to pay full price. You’re going to head over to Chef’s Catalog and pay the extreme discount price of $399.99! That means you’ll save $225.00.

Spend the savings on a grand feast for all your friends.

Andrew Had a Little Lambskin

A good satchel style handbag is one of the most useful bags you can have. It carries a lot, looks great, and – if well chosen – will last for years. Of course it’s even better when you can get a bag worth over four hundred dollars for less than two hundred.

The Andrew Marc Rebecca lambskin satchelicon is just such a bag. The simple, classic lines and timeless colors will make this your go to bag when you need to carry a lot for years and years to come…and chances are it will last and still look great no matter how hard you use your purse.

The suggested retail price on this beauty is $450.00. Okay, it’s an investment piece, so I can look at that price tag without flinching. On the other hand, I’m not going to say I don’t wish it were lower. Well, at Overstock.com it’s a lot lower! In fact, they have it for a mere $164.99! Now that’s a burden I don’t mind carrying nearly so much.

Bright Idea

Sometimes when you want to update a room, it’s as simple as changing out the lighting. Even if that’s not all you do, it’s a great place to start. For instance, if I were redoing my (small) entryway, I’d want this pendant light from Shaney to hang in it:

Shaney Fire Satin Blue Mini Pendant The Fire Satin Blue mini pendant is stylish and elegant, and sheds 100w of light on the situation. Comes complete with rods in three different sizes to suit the needs of your home: 6″, 16″, and 22″. There’s also a slope adaptor, just in case.

Best of all, it’s on a great sale at Bellacor. The retail price is $250.00, but it’s on clearance now for just $94.00! With savings like that, you can do a lot more for that room than change out the light.

Friday Finds Under Fifty: Warm and Snuggly Stuff

It’s friday, and you know what that means: a grab bag of great deals under fifty bucks. This week, in honor of the increasingly cold weather, I’m doing warm, wooly, snuggly things to keep you – or the people you love – comfortable and insulated.

Let’s start with a great deal from Bluefly.

Renees Accessories Pocket Scarf I love this cheerful scarf by Renee’s Accessories. Not only does it come in this joyful red trimmed in charcoal, it’s also available in classic black trimmed in ivory. Best of all it has pockets!

<>I know, I know. It’s a thing. I just love pockets, even when they aren’t the most practical. What’s definitely practical is the price. Originally it sold for $42.00, but now it’s available for just $25.00! That’s 40% off!
